Listed speeds are only available through Hughes’ new satellite. Most subscribers will have access to these faster speeds, but approximately 3% will not be able to receive these speeds because trees or other obstacles may block the signal from the satellite to the HughesNet dish on the house. For these subscribers, Hughes can offer slightly slower Internet access speeds from another satellite with the following three service plans: the Home plan with download speeds up to 700 Kbps and upload speeds up to 128 Kbps; the Pro plan with download speeds up to 1.0 Mbps and upload speeds up to 200 Kbps; and the ProPlus plan with download speeds up to 1.5 Mbps and upload speeds up to 200 Kbps.
In all cases, actual upload speed will likely be lower than the speed indicated during peak hours. Download speeds may also be temporarily slowed if patterns of system usage exceed the download threshold for an extended length of time. See the HughesNet Fair Access Policy for further information.
Limitations of Satellite Internet
While the vast majority of web-based applications and websites work perfectly well with HughNet, however, there are a limited number of applications that are not recommended.

While VoIP does function there is a slight delay in the conversation.  The delay in VoIP and other similar programs are a result of Latency.  Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite internet service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server.

In addition, connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with the HughesNet service is not recommended, despite the faster speeds available with the HN9000 modem. If you choose to run VPN over satellite internet, your data speeds may be reduced as much as 50% to 75% while the VPN session is active. Once the VPN session is terminated, the subscriber’s typical connection speed resumes. HughesNet Technical Support does not provide configuring or troubleshooting support for subscriber’s issues associated with VPN connections.
